When most people think of paediatric physiotherapy, the first thing that tends to pop in mind are neurological conditions like cerebral palsy or babies with a developmental delay who are not meeting their milestones. While these are definitely conditions that are commonly treated, paediatric physiotherapy is able to treat a multitude of conditions, and most people are surprised to learn that this includes orthopaedic injuries! Whether your child is having neck or shoulder pain due to at-home learning or experienced an ankle sprain, our physiotherapists at All About Kids Rehabilitation Centre are experts in the treatments of musculoskeletal injuries of both adults and children.
You may be thinking, so what kinds of conditions are we talking about here? Orthopaedic conditions involve any injury causing pain or discomfort as a result of a traumatic injury, repetitive movements or a longstanding history of poor posture.
Conditions that we treat at All About Kids Rehabilitation:
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
- Low back pain
- Hip pain
- Diastasis recti
- Ankle sprains
- Fracture/dislocation
- Patellofemoral pain syndrome
- Sports injuries
- Headaches
- Concussions
- Nerve pain
- Brachial plexus injury
- Generalized muscle weakness
- and much more!
What does a typical paediatric physiotherapy session look like?
That is a great question! The first thing our physiotherapists will do is perform a comprehensive initial assessment to get a better understanding about your child’s condition and what components of the neuromusculoskeletal system are causing their pain or discomfort. This involves our therapists asking detailed questions to get a full background about the condition as well as a complete medical history to get a better picture of what is going on.
Following this, our paediatric physiotherapists will then undergo a physical exam involving both active and passive movements of the area of concern to confirm an accurate diagnosis. After a diagnosis is made, our physiotherapist will provide all of this information to both yourself and your child so that you are fully involved in your child’s care. An individualized treatment plan is then created to ensure that your child will make the best recovery which includes a tailored at-home exercise program!
What is unique about All About Kids Rehabilitation Centre?
We have paediatric physiotherapists that are not only trained in high level orthopaedic physiotherapy, we also utilize our specialized exercise unit, or as some of our kids call it “the cage!” Our therapeutic Therasuit cage involves a pulley system that we use for muscle strengthening, as well as a bungee unit that allows the therapist to isolate specific muscles while maintaining the child in proper alignment. We have seen amazing progress in children with orthopaedic conditions due to our one of a kind treatment method!
Our paediatric physiotherapists are highly trained in the treatment of orthopaedic conditions and value one-on-one, high quality patient care. All About Kids Rehabilitation uses a combination of patient education, hands on treatment, and individualized exercise prescription to help treat your child’s pain. We are also excited to offer Neurofunctional accupuncture as an adjunct to our physiotherapy services. Check our our blog Neurofunctional Acupuncture – All About Kids (allaboutkidsrehab.ca) to learn more about it!
If you have a child with an orthopaedic injury or are still unsure whether your child requires physiotherapy, call us and we can provide you with a comprehensive assessment and individualized treatment plan to get your child back to doing the things they love!
